Congratulation Miss Hannah

It is what happens when you are 16. It is a right-of-passage that most everyone goes through. It is a..a...a...I don’t know if I can say it, but I must. It's a drivers license. Hannah got her divers license. There, I said it. And saying it must make it real, right?

Hannah has her drivers license in her wallet. She's getting behind the wheel and begin a new phase in her life. A phase that includes responsibility like she's never known before. She's had plenty of time to practice and prepare for her test... she's had plenty of time to become a licensed driver!

As for me... I need more time. When did I become the the birthmother of a 16 year old? Although I've been privileged enough to have an open adoption and see her grow up before my eyes, I still think of her as a little girl. I know I can’t hold on to her and keep her my baby forever... but still... where did the time go?

I suppose I must accepted this stage. However, I know that the changes are just beginning. When Hannah was here last week for Suzi's wedding she was so beautiful and mature. It was during this recent visit that I had the realization that she's almost the same age as I was when I got pregnant with her. SCARY! She's way too young for that kind of stuff!

I'm proud of her. I'm proud of the sensible head she has on her shoulders. I'm proud of the great morals and values she's learned. I'm proud she passed her driver's test on the very first try. I'm proud to be called her birthmother.

But, if I have a slight look of panic in my eye when I talk about her, don’t worry. I’m really not freaking out too much. I’m just being a mom and doing the best that I can as I watch her grow up and become a woman.

Congratulations Hannah on your driver's license!
