FFF... Favorite Foto Friday* ... A Public Service Announcement

*Okay... this probably isn't a "Favorite Foto" but I'm going to use it as such.

I'll be the first to admit that I personally have some pack rat tendencies... but these photo's show that in some cases it gets out of control.

Thankfully, this isn't a picture of my house... but it's a house that belongs to a lady that I've been appointed the legal guardian of.

This is called Hoarding.

As a Social Worker, I see a lot of Hoarding. Hoarding results in people keeping large amounts of items that to the outside world seem excessive or worthless/useless. Hoarding is surrounded by much secrecy and shame. People become isolated and unsocialized.

The general public thinks these people are just slobs or lazy, but actually most of the time they hoard because they don't want to waste things... or they want to make the right decision about an item (to keep it or throw it away) but they can't figure out the answer. The person fills up with anxiety to the point that it becomes overwhelming to make a decision and thus they "just keep it."

And after 40 years of "just keeping it" you see homes like the one pictured above. Unfortunately, these pictures don't even come close to showing the worst of it. Many of the pictures I took are not for the faint of heart. The lady who I'm legally in charge of didn't even have a pathway to get to her bathroom. She'd been using a 5 gallon bucket in her living room as a toilet for last 2 years! She also hadn't left her home or had guests over for 15 years because of embarrassment about her living conditions.

I'm going to use these photo's as a reminder to CLEAR CRAP OUT of the house this weekend. I urge you to do the same.

Our Big ole' Sweetie!

He has loving eyes, a wet nose, and a tail that moves like a dune buggy antenna
Yep, that our new dog.

Any dog can give you love, but there's something about a RESCUED dog that's very different.

His eyes emit a gratefulness that can never be put into words. His love is completely unconditional. He nuzzles our hands even when there's no food in them. He silently sits next to us and offers strength when we're having a bad day. He loyally lays at the foot of our bed protecting "his" family.

In a matter of weeks this big ole' sweetie has totally stolen our hearts and has proven to be the best friend Bryant could ever have.
And in saying all that, the fact that he's been sick since the day we got him home has weighed heavily on us... both financially and emotionally.

Yesterday we took our 2nd emergency trip to the Veterinary Hospital/Clinic. I've always thought I was one of those people who wouldn't put alot of money into "saving" a pet. Honestly, I've never been able to understand why someone would spend thousands of dollars to keep a pet alive.

Well, I guess I was wrong... I do understand. I can't turn my back. I am HAPPILY paying to get our dog well and keep him alive.

Here he is on the way to the Vet. Hospital last night. Our 'Big Sweetie' was choking, throwing up and having an overall hard time breathing. He hadn't eaten more than 3 bowls of dog food since we adopted him.

He had to be quarantined and brought in through the back door of the hospital/clinic!

Apparently he has a super contagious respiratory bacteria which is closing off his airway. His cough is affecting his throat which is causing him to choke and throw up. He's unable to eat because of his throat (which the vet said is good because otherwise he would aspirate). Poor guys has lost almost 10 pounds in 2 weeks.

Here he is- so scared to be on the examination table (not to mention he had a thermometer up his butt!)

He was given an I.V., 2 injections of antibiotics, 1 injection of a pain medication, 1 injection of a cough medication and sent home with 5 prescriptions!

He gets his medication four times a day. He has to take it with food (so that his stomach isn't upset)... we give it to him in bread and peanut butter.

Here's "the gold"... these prescriptions cost more than what I spent on groceries each month!

So, I guess I would ask you to please pray for our dog...

our Big ole' Sweetie.

Pray for the 4th member of family who has taught us so much in the last 2 weeks. He's taught us to...

• Make a big fuss greeting loved ones when they come home.
• Always take the opportunity to go for a joyride just for the fun of it.
• Allow the fresh air and wind in your face to become pure ecstasy.
• Let others know when they have invaded your territory.
• Take lots of naps and always stretch before getting back up.
• Run, romp and play daily just for fun.
• Thrive on attention and like it when people touch you.
• Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
• Stop and lie on your back in the grass on warm, sunny days.
• Drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree on hot days.
• Show happiness by dancing around and wagging your entire body.
• There’s no need to pout — just run right back and make friends.
• A long walk is a simple thing to take joy in.
• Eating with gusto and enthusiasm is OK.
• Being loyal is of great importance.
• You should never pretend to be something you are not.
• If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
• When someone else is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and show them you care.

Dogs really are a man's best friend!

PS: If you're wondering why I never call the dog by a name it's because he has about 5. Poor thing is probably going to have multiple personalities from all the names we call him. We're still trying to narrow down a name (he responds to anything... but mostly to anything Bryant calls him... and Bryant calls him "Big ole' Sweetie.")

FFF... Favorite Foto Friday... My BFF

This is my mom... my BFF...

When I was five, I thought my mom was a goddess. I would smear my face with her lipstick and model her earrings and high heels, wanting to be just like my mommy.

When I was thirteen, and most my friends' moms suddenly becomes the most ignorant, mean, out-of-touch creatures on the planet, my mom was still awesome.

And then, somewhere in my twenties, I started thinking of my mom as my best friend forever (BFF).

I have grown up being lucky enough to have a mother who showers me with love, praise, approval, kindness, empathy, forgiveness, respect, friendship, time and companionship, understanding, support, and validation.

My mom has strength, motivation, intelligence, courage and a sense of humor. After all, she lets me talk her into doing crazy things like this (see this post).

So today, I offer a picture of me & my mom... my bff... for my favorite foto from this week.

I love you mom!

Like A Kid in a Candy Shop...

Last weekend Zac and I had our first night out together (alone) in over a year (thanks to my mom and dad being in town). We had 3 hours to waste before our dinner reservation... and honestly it was hard to find something to do.

We did all the "normal" things we use to do-

*Go to the bookstore and liesurely browse.... CHECK

*Go look at the college dorms and rented houses we used to live in and talk about how cool we thought they were (and really what a dump they are now)... CHECK

*Go the mall and thank the good Lord that we don't have a daughter who is hanging out looking like a Hoochie... CHECK

*Drop by our friend's houses unannounced and see if we can catch them with a house as dirty as ours... CHECK

Finally we decided to do something different and somewhat constructive with our time. We have a new store in town which is all the RAGE. Our 5 year old son has been there 3 times... but neither Zac or I have.

And so, we decided it was the perfect time to make our maiden voyage to go check it out...

We decided to visit the 132,000 sq. ft. showroom that is known as Cabela's.

A visit to a Cabela's store is a retail experience, a museum experience and a destination experience, all rolled into one! Zac was like a kid in a candy store!

There were Bows...

There were Guns (and Daniel Boone hats)...

A shooting gallery...

More shooting attractions...

Boat Motors...

Lots and Lots of flies for Fly Fishing...

Museum-quality animal displays...
And so much more! Cabela's offers sensational visual décor and an unmatched selection of merchandise.

Best of all... we waste over 3 hours, throughly enjoyed ourselves and didn't spend a dime!

A Busy 4 day Weekend...

My parents flew over for the President's Day weekend. It's always great to have them here... yet we never seem to have enough time. Hopefully they'll move to Boise soon- then we'll have all the time in the world.

THURSDAY
20 minutes after Flying into Boise we were at the Boise Senior Center playing BINGO.

As you may remember (see this post) I'd brought my mom to play BINGO before... but my dad had never experienced the excitement (tongue in cheek). He didn't believe us when we said it was hard and the old people were ruthless.

Doesn't my dad look nervous in the picture below? It's because a lady (and I say that loosely) was swearing up a storm because someone else called "Bingo." Even on The Saprano's they didn't use that many 4 letter words in a row. So much for your stereotyped sweet little grey haired grandma who bakes cookies :)

But the lucky winners on Thursday night were my sister, Suzi, and her husband, Austin. They won over $100!

FRIDAY

Bryant received 2 love letters from MacKenzie and Delanie in the mail. Oh yeah... he thought he was the Mack Daddy.

He also received a snow globe from the girls in Salt Lake... on the back it was incribed "Bryant wish you were here with us." Honestly, he slept the snow globe last night so he could be close to his girlfriends in spirit. This kid's no dummie. He knows where is bread is buttered...

SATURDAY

We started the day by looking for baby furniture for Suzi's baby. When we were at the furniture store I MADE my mom try a senior citizen lift chair. Now that's she's turning 62 we have to make fun of her (lovingly of course). Plus as a Gerontological Social Worker it is my job to prepare her for her future...LOL...

After shopping we went to Mexica food (my absolute favorite). I was born on a Cinco De Mayo... so I'm sure that has something to do with my love of Mexican food.

Not only did I get to have Tamale's and some great Enchillada's... but I got to have a Shirley Temple. Does anyone remember that drink? A Shirley Temple reminds me of being a little girl. Whenever we would go out to Mexican food my dad would order me a Shirley Temple... I don't think I've had one since I was about 12. Oh... they (I drank 3) were as good as I remembered.

Saturday night we went to a Party In Your PJ's party at our local ceramic studio. We had a blast. The place was packed...
What is better than doing something you love in your pajama's? I'll tell you... it's doing all that and adding in my mom and sister.
Here's what I painted (it's being fired and won't be ready for pick up until Tuesday). Contrary to popular belief (like half the ceramic studio asked me)... it's NOT a dog bowl. It's a salad bowl.
SUNDAY
Bryant got all gussied up to hang out with Grandpa and Ganny. Ganny got him the shirt he was wearing.

MONDAY

The weather was so nice that we spent some time playing football at the park.

Here's Zac throwing the ball to my dad. Hopefully I picked a picture where his form is good since he's a football coach!

Even my dad got in on the football game. What a stud...

My mom and dad left yesterday. Our house now seems so quiet and lonely. Especially since Zac has class tonight (he's getting his Master's degree). I never thought I would say this, but hopefully Bryant starts making some noise and bringing our house ALIVE.

PS: Are they ever going to fix the spell check on Blogger. I hate posting knowing that I have a ton of mis-spelled words.

FFF... Favorite Foto Friday

You know those days where you've had it...
You wonder if your child EVER listens to you...
The days where you wonder where all your child's manners have gone...
The days you question your parenting skills...

Well recently I was having one of those days. I was about to pull my hair out. I was wondering what Zac and I had done wrong to create such a "monster" of a child.

And then, low and behold, I look over the table and see this:

It immediately stopped me in my tracks. I smiled and thought to myself, "He is learning something... He does listen... He does have manners... I am a good parent..."

You see, Bryant was quietly saying grace before he ate his dinner. He was doing it on his own... without prompting. He was doing it even though nobody was watching. He was doing it because he WANTED to. He was doing it because even though he's only 5, he probably knows God better than Zac and I do.

This is my Favorite Foto this week because it reminds me that Bryant watches everything we do. He watches how we act and react. He is learning even when we don't think he is. And yet, he has a lot to teach us too... especially about our relationship with God. Is he an angel... NO... but he is an example of a smart, happy, kind, compassionate, prayerful little boy.

Happy Valentines Day

How could you not want to be Valentine's with the cutest little guy in the world?
I know that I couldn't resist. Bryant is my Valentine... but he's an equal opportunity lover... so you can be his valentine too.

Zac woke up to a find a Valentine's gift of Sponge Bob Square Pants boxer shorts and drinking glasses. I was feeling both "playful" and "practical" this year.

The Sponge Bob boxers made me laugh because Zac LOVES to watch Sponge Bob with Bryant. The boxers say, "Talk Nerdy to Me." That is sooooo Zac. He is a total nerd (he reads history books for fun... yuck!)

The drinking glasses are to make him happy. Zac drinks a lot of water and he's always complaining about not having a decent glass to drink out of. He wants a "man" glass... not a foo foo girly glass. These are deffinitely glasses for a man... they are heavier then heck. Bryant received the standard Valentine's chocolates (he's not a big candy fan). And then he got a few fun gifts. He got a Monkey that sings "Everybody Dance Now." As he starts singing he also starts breakdancing. He's pretty funny.

Bryant also got socks. This kid of ours is crazy about shoes and socks. There is very little he loves more than a new pair of shoes or socks. So... today he received 12 new pairs of socks.
And lastly, our family Valentine's gift was a rescued 6 year old Chocolate Lab! We've been searching, waiting and praying for an older dog that needed a home for a long time. Yesterday we received a call that "the perfect dog" was brought into the Idaho Humane Society and was waiting for us.
So... this is the newest member of our family. He is our Valentine dog. He's a big sweetie! He's been well trained and is going to make the perfect addition to the family.

Happy Valentine's Day to all of you. May you be blessed with love and friendship today.

The Two Greatest Guys in MY World...

Today was one of those days when I was bored.
I should have been cleaning the house...
but instead I was looking for ANYTHING else to do!

Because I have the two greatest guys...
the loves of my life...
they inspired me to get out the camera and snap some pictures.

God really blessed me the day he sent Zac into my life!

He also blessed me when he gave me my MIRACLE baby... Bryant!

Who would have known that 6 years later we still haven't been able to conceive again.

My two guys make my life complete.
And although none of us are perfect... we are perfect for each other!

FFF- Favorite Foto Friday

This is a picture of my sister, Suzanne. Do you notice what the shirt says?

Couldn't read it? Well here it is a little larger.

Did you guess what she's trying to tell us? Yes, she is pregnant! Her and her husband are expecting their first child this summer!!!

Much to her chagrin, she had to buy a couple pairs of maternity pants already. My mom and I MADE her try on the belly pillow they have to similate a larger pregnant stomache. I think she looks SO CUTE... but you can see by the ugly face she's making what she thought of the big belly and maternity pants.
And here is their baby's first picture. My current Favorite Foto....

(I threw this picture on here so that Suzanne can't yell at me for posting only "ugly pictures".) This is Suzi and Bryant at her wedding last summer.

PS: My mom has a great photo of Zac on her blog for FFF....

****Things I noticed on a Snow Day****

Every winter, kids around much of the country long to hear those magic words... "snow day." I still remember lying in my bed on winter mornings, listening to the radio and waiting to hear if my school's name was read off a big list of closings and cancellations due to a "snow day." Unfortunately Snow Day's were few and far between since I grew up in Portland (rain was way more common then snow).

But still, there is something so magical about snow (and we've been getting a lot of it this year.) It makes everything look better. It gives a layer of cottony brightness to trees, fences and lawns... it covers a bike left in the driveway, turning its frame into an abstract sculpture. It hightens beauty and covers flaw.

Perhaps my favorite thing is to see its magic through the eyes of Bryant. Through Bryant I've noticed that a "snow day" helps me to slow down and see everything I've been forgetting to notice. Here's what I noticed on Sunday...

I noticed we'd received a heck of alot of snow! On right side of the picture the curb goes down about 4 inches below the snow line.

I noticed the boys enjoyed playing scientists and taking rulers and measuring the amount of snow we received.

I noticed by afternoon we had received over 10 inches of snow!

I noticed that snow can cool a diet coke almost immediately. Oh, I do love my ice cold diet coke!

I noticed the snow sculptures the boys made. What beauty. Add a little Kool-Aid and they become giant snow cones!

I noticed the neighborhood girls enjoyed sitting around in our front yard and looking pretty. Don'tcha know that snow makes all girls look pretty (according to Bryant)!

I noticed that Bryant and Cooper are "all boy" and promptly made a giant snow hill to sled down.

I noticed Bryant spent more time falling down than he did standing up.

I noticed that snow makes boys really hungry. They ate cinamon rolls and drank hot apple cider.

I noticed that some kids are so excited to see the snow they just run out their front door and down to my house in their pajama's and crocks.

I noticed that kids love to build things in the snow. Especially snow forts.

I noticed Bryant likes to pretend he's a spy who's crawling out of the ground tunnel to catch a bad guy.

I noticed that I need to play in the snow more often and get more exercise. My a$$ barely fit in the snow fort.

I noticed that I am really still a kid at heart and I love snow days!
